Frequently Asked Questions

Starting your health journey can feel overwhelming. Here are answers to some of the most common questions.

What does a fertility nutritionist do?

I work like a detective, investigating the underlying causes of your fertility challenges. This could be nutritional gaps, an imbalanced microbiome, or hormone disruption. From there, I use diet, targeted supplements and lifestyle medicine to bring your body back into balance.

Can nutrition help with infertility?

Yes, hugely. What we eat becomes our cells, including eggs and sperm, and the building blocks our hormones are made from. Infertility can be driven by a wide range of subtle, often overlooked factors: hormone imbalances, sperm DNA fragmentation, microbiome imbalances in the gut, vagina, uterus or semen, poor egg and sperm cell quality, autoimmunity, nutrient depletions, thyroid dysfunction, insulin resistance, chronic inflammation and mitochondrial dysfunction, to name a few. My approach goes beyond generic diet advice though. I use functional testing to look at what's actually happening for you, then build a plan combining diet, lifestyle and targeted supplements to address the real cause, not just support fertility in general.

How is this different from standard fertility care?

My work goes a lot deeper. I test for markers that simply aren't available on the NHS or in most private clinics, and I often work alongside consultants and IVF teams rather than in place of them. The aim isn't to replace reproductive technology, but to work alongside it so that you have the best possible chance of a healthy, full term pregnancy. Interestingly, many of my clients preparing for IVF go on to conceive naturally during our work together.

Are your recommendations evidence based?

Yes. Every recommendation I make is grounded in published research and clinical evidence, and I stay on top of the latest studies as they come out. It takes an average of 18 years for published medical research to filter through into NHS and NICE guidelines, a genuinely alarming gap when it comes to something as time sensitive as fertility. My work is about closing that gap, bringing you what the evidence shows right now, not what guidelines will eventually catch up to. Where evidence is still developing, I'll always be upfront about that too, so you know exactly what we're working with.

I feel like I've tried everything already. What makes this different?

I hear this a lot, and I understand it completely. Often "everything" has meant standard testing and general advice, which only gives part of the picture. My work goes deeper, using functional testing to find what's actually going on for you specifically, rather than a generic approach. Having been through my own fertility journey, I also know how exhausting it is to keep trying without answers, and that's exactly what I aim to change.

I've had a lot of medical testing. Can you still help?

Brilliant. Please share everything you have before our first appointment. I also understand how frustrating it is when testing doesn't give you the answers you need, so I may suggest we explore further areas such as the microbiome, sperm DNA fragmentation, genetic testing or more advanced blood work.

I am worried about making lots of changes to my diet. Do I have to?

I will meet you exactly where you are. There's no pressure, and we work with what you feel comfortable with, including your food likes and dislikes. It's worth saying that diet is just one part of my work, "nutritionist" is, in some ways, a misleading title for what the role involves. The larger part of the process is functional testing, targeted supplements, and rebalancing the underlying systems driving your symptoms and fertility challenges. Dietary suggestions will always be part of your plan, but this isn't a "change everything about how you eat" approach, and the odd sweet treat or bowl of pasta still has its place in a healthy, balanced life.

Does nutrition help women preparing for egg freezing?

Absolutely. This is one of my specialist areas. The right combination of diet, targeted supplements and lifestyle changes can make a real difference to egg quality and retrieval outcomes.
